Phone-Free Policy
Starting Tuesday, February 18, 2024, Frost Middle School will implement a Phone-Free School Day policy as an extension of our existing school policy. This initiative aims to enhance focus on learning, improve social interactions, encourage physical activity, and promote student mental health and wellness.
Policy Overview:
During the school day (from the moment students enter campus to dismissal), students are required to turn off all cell phones and similar devices (e.g., smartwatches, earbuds, smart glasses).
- Stored in portable storage containers in classrooms (at the teacher’s discretion), or
- Stored in lockers, which must remain outside the classroom due to the no-backpack policy in classrooms, or
- Stored in a manner where the devices remain out of sight from school staff (e.g. pocket, pencil case, etc.)
Implementation Steps:
- Students must turn off their cell phones upon entering campus.
- Devices must remain out of sight during the school day unless reasonable use is permitted by staff for specific needs.
- Phones will either be placed in portable classroom storage if deemed necessary by the teacher or stored in lockers, as appropriate.|
- Phones may only be retrieved from the portable classroom storage at the end of class or if confiscated, from the Counseling Office after dismissal.
To help families better understand the impact of cell phone use on students’ learning and well-being, we encourage parents to read the book Anxious Generation, which provides valuable insights into how digital distractions can affect young minds and emphasizes the importance of limiting screen time.
Electronic Devices
- Student use of electronic devices with an instructional purpose must be approved by the teacher conducting the instructional activities and must be related to the delivery of academic content standards (cannot violate district policy). Additionally, it must be done in accordance with the guidelines set by the school district and laws regarding privacy matters (i.e. it is against the law to photograph or videotape someone without his/her consent).
- Students in nonconformity with RFMS Electronic Devices Policy will have their electronic device confiscated by school staff. Confiscated electronic devices will only be returned to parents or guardians.
- Should a student or parent have the need to contact each other during school hours, they can communicate by calling to/from the school office telephone number.
- RFMS encourages students to leave all electronic devices at home. RFMS assumes no responsibility for lost, stolen, or confiscated student electronic devices.
